3/13/10 – Kurt & Erin Thatcher

Wedding season has started – and what a party Kurt & Erin had to kick it off!  Hosted at the Pioneer Pavilion in Puyallup, WA – 200 of Kurt & Erin’s family and closest friends traveled from around the country (and the world!) to share in a night no one will forget!

The Pioneer Pavilion is one of the toughest venues to play because of the acoustics – but equipped with my Bose L1 and my two Bose L1 compacts in the corners, I finally am satisified with the sound – it was an audio bliss & nirvana at the same time.  Terri with Act 3 Catering said she never heard the sound at the venue so clearly – and the entire staff loved the sound check with Phil Collin’s “In the Air Tonight” playing in the background.

But this night was about Kurt & Erin – another couple I will never forget and love so much!  We kept the reception very straight forward and classy.  Hosting an open bar and buffet, Erin and Kurt assigned table numbers and we invited tables to the buffet by random draw – which got guests and vendors involved.  For the table that unfortunately was last to be released, I presented (and surprised!) them with two boxes of Girl Scout Cookies – a thank you for being patient and understanding!

After toasts and cutting the cake, it was time to dance – and that they did for two hours straight – playing hits from all the decades of music – from everyone singing along to “Brown Eyed Girl” to both grandmas and Erin and Kurt’s friends getting low to Flo Rida’s “Low”.  It was a night that I wish would never end – but when it finally came to a close, everyone cheered and hugged and wished Erin and Kurt their best wishes!

8/16/09 – Justin & Jenna Takayoshi

August 17th, 2009

Ahhh, my final wedding of the weekend, Justin & Jenna Takayoshi’s reception at the Pioneer Park Pavilion in Puyallup.  As a bit of background to this couple, Justin and I played baseball together for many years.  Our family has remained close family friends throughout the years – so there was a bit of nervous pressure for me!  But nervous pressure and tension is a good thing if you know what to do with it – and like any high-quality entertainer – I have learned to bottle it and use it to focus my energy and direction on being in the moment and delivering a special performance.  And because of the nature of the event, I feel this was one of my finest performances, ever.

While I awaited outside for Justin and Jenna to arrive, I arranged for a nice cocktail mix to play in the background for the guests.  I’ll be honest here – the Pioneer Park Pavilion is a tough acoustic venue.  Many DJs have to bring in four speakers to cover the room – but with the Bose L1’s – two was plenty!  After lining up the wedding party, we brought them in for introductions – and then I narrated the Love Story I wrote for Justin & Jenna.  After their “Welcome & Thank You’s” it was time for dinner – however, despite a late arrival and entrance than planned – the catering staff was still not ready.  So I filled the time with our planned centerpiece give-away interaction (“The Dollar Pass”).  This prevent an awkard, uncomfortable waiting period – and kept the energy level high throughout dinner.

Before the evening’s toasts, I collected and read family and friend’s Words of Wisdom to Justin & Jenna – many recurring themes were advised, such as “Put the toliet seat down” and “Justin, two words to remember: You’re Right!”  After our toasts and cake cutting, we allowed for a few minutes of a social interlude as some guests unfortunately had to leave for their early morning work shifts.  But for all those that stayed…

Justin and Jenna shared a lovely first dance to Brad Paisley’s “Then” – one of my favorite slow songs.  Following the parent dances, many of the guests engaged in the Money Dance for Justin & Jenna’s honeymoon in Maui.  Then came the fun – a bouquet and garter toss, followed by my signature Garter On the Catcher of the Bouquet Routine.  As usual, I will just mention this – everyone enjoyed it immensely.  Finally, it was time to open the dance floor – and with the sunshine still shining in on the early Sunday evening – I still had a majority of the guests on the dance floor.

Playing a lot of fun songs and line dances, these guests just wanted to have fun – and they did.   The expectations on guests dancing was low – but I was determined to keep people on the dance floor and having a good time.  Perhaps it helped I setup a light show, despite the daylight hours – but I think it helped alter the atmosphere and create one that catered to dancing, even if it was barely visible.

Again, a night and reception I was honored and proud to have been a part of – and one of those nights where you realize why you are so passionate about this industry and why I do what I do every weekend.

7/31/09 – Josh & Colleen Freese

August 3rd, 2009

Ahh, the final wedding reception of July 2009 – and what a party it was!  Josh and Colleen held their wedding reception at  High Cedars Golf Course in Orting, WA and over 200 guests came to dance the night away!

Josh and Colleen were refered to me from my 2008 wedding clients, Justin and Stephanie Hite – who were both in attendance with their daughter Sophia.  During our planning meetings, Josh and Colleen were very specific in their style of their wedding: fun & upbeat without being cheesy; no games; keep it classy.  So did I deliver on their needs?  I’ll let Colleen’s email from the next day tell you:

Hi Tony!

Josh and I leave for our honeymoon tomorrow (at 4am!!) but I just wanted to shoot you a quick email saying THANK YOU so very much for such an incredible job!  I knew you were going to be great and you far surpassed anything we could have ever dreamed of.  You cannot believe how many people we had compliment us on our DJ and what a great party it was!  I have never seen our family members that drenched with sweat from dancing so hard in my entire life and I’m sure we will never see it again!

Thank you so much for making our reception SO MUCH BETTER than we could imagine. We will shout your name from the mountain tops when any of our newly engaged friends ask for recommendations!

Take care,
Colleen Freese

I love when couples have such a defined vision of their reception – it makes my job that much easier and allows me to focus on making sure everything I do is right for them.  It also helps to work alongside awesome vendors that “get it”.  From the venue and catering staff to the videographer to the photographer – everyone worked as a team to make this day perfect for Josh and Colleen!

June 12th, 2009 – Kyle & Danielle Hart

June 16th, 2009

On Friday night, I was the MC & DJ for the wedding reception of Kyle & Danielle Hart – a fun, lovely young couple that had met at WSU in Pullman.  The venue was the Pioneer Pavilion in Puyallup – an acoustically tough building for DJs -  but I thought the Bose L1 System handled it just fine :)

Danielle is an asipring wedding planner and I hope she continues to chase that dream – she was a joy to work with.  Kyle was a great guy – a lot of fun and I know he will be an amazing husband to Danielle!

So with Friday weddings, I really like to be as interactive and fun as possible – I think the MC role is more critical than the DJ role.  With Friday weddings, it’s typically been a warm sunny day, the end of a long work week – people typically want to sit back and relax – but if you strike the right chords, they will have a lot of fun and get down to party!

So for this reception, I wrote and narrated their Love Story – and I did it a bit different than normal due to the video of their engagement being featured in our slide show.  I also did 30 Second Wedding Bios for their wedding party members – a lot of laughs all the way around!  And with a last name of Hart, First Baby Name Suggestions from their guests was a must – Achy Breaky was one of my favorite suggestions!

All in all – a great Friday evening wedding!

Pictures!

As always, I only take photos before the event as I find it tacky and rude to take pictures while performing.

My setup - we had a giant screen directly above me for the slideshow! Sorry for the loan wire hanging out - the Pavillion does not allow tape of any kind and I grabbed the rug mat to cover it after the photo. My setup – we had a giant screen directly above me for the slideshow! This is the head table - do you notice the red light on the brick wall behind the table? I know it was still light out, but the "uplighting" is there...

Red Uplights - I used red to tie into the theme colors of red, white, and black. These were placed at certain points around the room - it's all about atmosphere!
