12/12/09 – Adam & Michelle Goddard

December 14th, 2009

Ah, December, one of the most fesitive months of the year.  And if you are going to have a winter wedding – December is just the month to have one!  And for Adam and Michelle Goddard, they had an amazing crowd that was ready to party!

Due to time constraints with Kensington Gardens, I worked with Michelle and Adam to plan a wedding reception that would maximize the amount of open dancing possible – we only had four hours to do a ceremony, room flip, and reception with a sit-down dinner.  Thus, we had to prioritze what was most important in their wedding reception entertainment and then build an itinerary that not only encompassed those priorities – but felt natural as well.  The simplified itinerary below doesn’t do justice – the formal dances were done during dinner, and my narration of the Love Story was performed as the final tables were being served their dinners and was a perfect segue into the toast.

I must give compliements to the guests of the Goddard wedding reception – they were awesome!  After a very cheerful reception of the Wedding Party’s Grand Entrance – I immediately transitioned into “That’s Amore” – and they sang along!  I knew I had a great crowd on hand – and they only proved it after I narrated Adam & Michelle’s “Love Story”.  For the first time ever, my clients got a standing ovation for their love story – and they completely deserved it!

And of course, when we opened the dance floor with “Blame It on the Boogie” – they didn’t stop dancing and singing until the final song of the night.  It was a great mix of funk, pop, and 80s dance – and I wish we had more time to dance the cold night away!

10/2/09 – Marc & Valerie Oman

October 5th, 2009

Looking for a premier wedding DJ in the Puget Sound area?  Click Here!

Only one wedding this past weekend, a Friday night affair at Salty’s on Alki Beach in Seattle.  In August I was at Salty’s for Garret and Melissa’s wedding – and it was a pleasure to come back!  This time, I conquered the accoustics of the room – great, clear sound was provided throughout the room!

Now Marc & Valerie were a great couple to work with!  Valerie was very specific during the planning phases – and together, they envisioned a fun and interactive wedding experience.  Did we make that vision happen?  Read on…

As guests mingled inside during the cocktail period, I organized the wedding party for their Grand Entrance.  Marc & Valerie had elected for me to write the 30 Second Wedding Party Bios for their wedding party members – but there was one problem – one of the groomsmen was unable to attend and a cousin was substituted in his place!  So, I quickly had to write a new bio – probably not my best piece of written work – but no one knew the difference!  Finally, for Marc & Valerie, I narrated their Love Story – and like clockwork – a huge ovation for the newlyweds as they came into the room, “I’ve Got A Feeling” pumping through my Bose Speakers.

From there, after Marc’s Welcome & Thank You to Guests, I setup the Guest Kiss List – and it did not take long for guests to catch on and start tapping their glasses.  It probably could have went on and on – but I ran out of couple names on my list after an hour.  Along with the Words of Wisdom cards and the “Shoe”lywed Game – Valerie and Marc’s guests were really into the wedding reception!

After dinner and toasts, there was one special surprise for Marc – he had to have all those keys returned!  I cannot spoil it for any potential grooms reading this blog – but if you would like to find out what I am referring to – you will have to ask for it at your wedding reception!  It was a hoot – and our Best Man, Nathan, played his part perfectly!

For the cutting of the cake, Marc & Valerie invited up Valerie’s Aunt and Father to recognize their birthdays!  They were asked to accept the first slice of cake – and then we all sang Happy Birthday to them!

After a brief social interlude – it was time to begin the dancing!  First, Valerie and Marc’s first dance, followed by a Father/Bride and Mother/Groom dance, and then our Longest Married Couple dance.  The winning couple was married 40 years!  Next up was the removal of the garter – and then we invitied everyone to the dancefloor for the tosses – the gentleman on the left and the girls on the right.  It was a completely different twist – but it worked and everyone had a great time with it!

This was an easy transition into the open dancing – and for the next two and a half hours, that is precisely what they did!  Valerie ’s family background was Lebanese, so we included Lebanese music and dancing into the mix – everyone had a great time!  Valerie and Marc’s other concern for the dancing was a DJ that could play club-style like on Kiss 106.1 FM – fortunately for them, I know how to rock a party on turntables!  And I did just that – rocking the best of 80s and 80s, 90s, pop, rock, and hip-hop - a complete old school set and I loved it!

Overall, it was an awesome party – one that I was proud to be a part of and help create!  Marc & Valerie, thank you for everything – you were a great couple to work for and I am so honored to be a part of your wedding celebration!

9/26/09 – Bob & Natalie Mustain

September 28th, 2009

Looking for a premier wedding DJ in the Puget Sound area?  Click Here!

On the final Saturday of September, Bob & Natalie – another couple I felt so blessed to work for! – exchanged their vows and hosted their wedding reception at Kensington Gardens in Gig Harbor, Washington.  You couldn’t ask for a better Fall day – the weather was beautiful – sunny and no wind!

After an awesome ceremony - ordained by Father Alan Kemp, a special song performance by Steve Sefanowicz, and sound reinforcement by yours truly, guests enjoyed a cocktail period while photographer Lynette Johnson walked the wedding party and family through their photo session.  Once freshened up, the wedding party got set for their grand entrance.

I’ll admit, I am feeling the wear and tear of a long wedding season – but in my mind, I have to be at 110% for my clients on the one wedding day they have waited for all year.  And I can honestly say – I have never felt so in the moment for Bob & Natalie’s grand entrance sequence.  For the wedding party, I wrote and narrated their 30 Second Wedding Party Bios – with the assistance of Bob & Natalie – and the room was a rockin’.  And then, once we completed the bios – it was time for Bob & Natalie’s Love Story.  And something just hit me – feeding off the story, the guests, and Bob and Natalie’s reaction to their story (I was the only one that could see them) – I just got into the story and the performance.  That’s the secret to the Love Story – it’s all about voice, presentation, and how it was written.

I immediately knew – this was my best Love Story performance yet.  And Bob & Natalie later commented – guests were impressed.

After their entrance, the entire party enjoyed salads, dinner, and desserts – there would be no wedding cake.  Natalie’s friend Stacy had prepared a slide show, I assisted with the projector and screen, and two of Natalie’s bridesmaids did their version of the “Shoe”lywed Game.  Somewhere in the midst, we also had the evening’s toasts.  Finally, it was time for the formal dances.

For the first dance, Bob & Natalie chose George Strait’s “I Cross My Heart”.  Then for Natalie’s dance with her father, she selected “The Way You Look Tonight” – only with a little twist – I had made an edit with the Rolling Stone’s “Start Me Up” to interject in the middle.  Natalie’s father, Phil, had no idea it was coming!  Finally, Bob danced with his mother, Sandy, to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man”.  We finished with a couples dance, and then proceeded to open the dance floor for the remainder of the night!

As I mentioned before, I was blessed to work for such a nice and easy-going couple – Bob & Natalie, I wish you both the best!

9/19/09 – Matthew & Jennifer Simmons

September 20th, 2009

Looking for a premier wedding DJ in the Puget Sound area?  Click Here!

I am at that point of the wedding season – one wedding a weekend!  Finally, a chance to have a little extra time each week to devote to my clients, my business, and yes, my sanity.  I love my clients, I appreciate them – but during the summer, it gets very chaotic – and sometimes I appreciate a Thursday off :)

However, I took last week and really focused in on the vision for Matthew & Jennifer’s dream wedding reception at the Rainier Club in Seattle, WA.  Jennifer built a beautiful itinerary for the reception that I believe was nearly 20 pages long – wedding planners, if I were you, I would contact her for a copy – this is how it should be done!  Every detail laid out – every timing well thought out and well planned out.  And it made building my itinerary a breeze!

So, we have a very elegant and classy style to work with – and three different rooms to provide sound for”

Ceremony System – Bose L1 Compact, MacBook Pro, Shure Lapel Microphone
Dinner Room – Heritage Room – Bose L1 Compact (Yes, I bought another one – I am a fan!), Microphone, iPod with Personally Selected Songs to fit the Atmosphere Desired by Matthew and Jennifer
Reception Room – Rainier Room – Bose L1 with Two Bass Modules, Light Show, and My Usual Setup

Each room had the best in sound quality - perfectly monitored for the approriate sound level.  Upbeat music the climbed in tempo and beats per minute – all designed to prepare guests for dancing!

And after wedding party introductions, did they ever dance!  Everything I threw at them – every curve ball, every new mix I could think of – they soaked it up and cheered for more.  I distinctly remember playing Pitbull’s “Calle Ocho (I Know You Want Me)” and saw people outside on the street dancing and wanting to join in!  Even though I was feeling under the weather – it was still one of the nights where all this energy picks you up!  It is why I love this profession – music brings energy and atmosphere – provided the music is done right!

Matthew and Jennifer – thank you so much for having me as a part of your beautiful wedding – many thanks for painting the perfect vision – I feel we nailed it perfectly!

9/11/09 – Nick & Carrie Rimbey

Friday Night was probably my biggest setup for a wedding ever – and it was worth every ounce of sweat and hard work to put it up!

Nick & Carrie hosted their wedding ceremony and reception at High Cedars Golf Course in Orting; I provided sound for both!  High Cedars has the best breadsticks – and Debbie, the reception manager, saved me a few – she’s awesome!

For 200 guests, I decided to run two Bose L1 sound systems with four B1 subs – the sound was amazing!  I also had a Bose L1 Compact in the back of the reception room – so guests in the front and back could hear everything with clarity – especially the toasts!

After the ceremony, we started with the Grand Entrance of the Wedding Party with a slightly abridged version of the 30 Second Wedding Bios, following up with the Love Story Introduction before Nick & Carrie’s Entrance.  Since I had my big DMX Light Show, I had created a light show scene to their entrance music, Kanye West’s “Stronger”.  After their entrance, Nick & Carrie thanked their guests and welcomed them to their reception.

To keep things organized for the buffet line, we released tables by my version of Bride and Groom Trivia – it was fast-paced and high-energy!  Country hits played in the background as guests enjoyed dinner and socialized – Nick and Carrie opted to keep dinner interactions to a minimal.

After toasts that featured an open mic session and a suprise toaster, Nick and Carrie went to cut their cake – and proceeded, with my assistance and setup, to smash their wedding cake not in their faces, but in the faces of the Best Man and Maid of Honor.  An old trick, but it was the right couple and party to do it for!

After cleaning up and socializing with guests leaving early on a Friday night, Nick and Carrie had their first dance to songs they picked out and dedicated to each other.  Again, I had customized a light show for this dance using their theme colors.  After dancing with their parents and wedding party – there was one thing left to do – toss the bouquet and garter.  And of course, Nick and Carrie asked me to perform my Garter On The Bouquet Catcher Routine – I think I need to redesign it for next year because everyone has seen it by now!

And then we danced, working from Nick & Carrie’s requests, guest requests, and my own knowledge and ability to mix the right song to fill in the gaps.  After two hours of dancing – it was time to wish Nick and Carrie well as they made their Grand Exit to their honeymoon destination!  It was an amazing night, a lot of fun, and I couldn’t work for two better people!

9/5/09 – Luke & Holly Ayers

September 7th, 2009

Saturday night, I took a little trip out into the country – to Lake Lawrence Lodge in Yelm for the wedding of Luke and Holly Ayers.  The place was beautifully decorated, and the evening turned out to be an amazing night.

After a beautiful ceremony, which I, again, was asked to provide sound reinforcement for, the room was transformed for the reception.  After helping Luke and Holly setup thier receiving line for guests to re-enter the Lodge, I lined the wedding party up for their Grand Introductions.  Luke and Holly supplied me with the information on each member – I wrote and narrated their bio!  Then for Luke and Holly – I narrated their Love Story – it was cute how they met and it was an honor to tell their story!

During dinner, Luke and Holly wanted a very interactive and entertaining experience.  Along with giving the centerpiece away and the “Shoe”lywed game, I finally did a new “game” – the Great Toliet Paper Race, with either Luke or Holly winning control of the remote control for one year!  I even gave them a nice certificate, I’m sure Holly will have it framed and by the TV in no time ;)

After toasts and cake cutting, Holly & Luke enjoyed their first dance together, followed by Holly dancing with her father and step-father, and then Luke dancing with his mother.  We then tossed the Bouquet and Garter, and then I was asked to perform my post-garter and bouquet toss routine.  This time, the Maid of Honor and her boyfriend were the lucky couple – something Holly and Luke wanted manipulated.  This led into a great high-energy segway into opening the dance floor and the rest of the night!

8/29/09 – Dustin & Janelle Snyder

August 30th, 2009
Looking for a premier wedding DJ in the Puget Sound area?  Click Here!

Well, August has come and gone – and my final wedding for the month of August was at High Cedars Golf Course for Dustin & Janelle Snyder.  One of the nicest couples ever – I had a lot of fun planning and performing for this wedding!

So, what did we do?

First, I was asked to provide sound for their ceremony – which featured a live acoustic performance by two vocalists and a guitarist.  After sound check, an errant tee shot hit a row of chairs and scared the heck out of everyone that was there - an usher yelled, “GRAB YOUR HELMETS!”  Fortunately, no one was hurt and no errant tee shots happened during the ceremony – that’s the risks of a ceremony on a golf course though!

After a beautiful ceremony that went off without a hitch – it was time for a mini-cocktail period and then the Grand Entrance and Introductions of the Wedding Party.  Dustin and Janelle had a great time supplying me with material on their wedding party – and a lot of laughter ensued for each wedding party member.  And then, before welcoming in my guests of honor – I narrated their Love Story – which I felt was vital for Dustin & Janelle.  Easily one of my youngest couples ever, I think the telling of their four year journey and how much they meant to each other really hit home that this was a marriage built to last, especially for a young couple.  At least that is how I feel in my heart – these two will be a future Longest Married Couple at one of my weddings (if I am still doing this 50 years from now :)  )

After dinner, we played a round of the “Shoe”lywed Game – and Dustin and Janelle scored very high!  Again, I told you – this was meant to be!  Followed up by toasts and cake cutting, we also recognized Autumn Leer’s 21st birthday with the second slice of the wedding cake – one of my favorite presentations.  Moments later, Dustin and Janelle were on the dance floor – sharing their first dance as husband and wife.

Foregoing the option to dance with their parents seperately, Dustin and Janelle invited their respective mother and father to dance with at the same time.  It was a very easy transition into our Longest Married Couple dance – won by Janelle’s grandparents – who then shared the remainder of the dance with Dustin & Janelle – a very cool moment!  Next up, we recognized the wedding party and family with their “Wedding Party Dance”, and followed up with the tossing of the Bouquet and Garter Toss.

Finally, before opening the dance floor for the remainder of the night – Dustin and Janelle loved the idea of my Post-Toss routine.  But we had a slight issue – an 11 year old had caught the bouquet.  Using some savvy and quick thinking – we suddenly had our new “Strangers in the Night” – and the routine went off without a hitch – with probably the biggest reaction from a bouquet catcher I have ever seen!  By night’s end – it was another great party and another happy couple ready to start the rest of their lives!

8/22/09 – Garret & Melissa Alpers

August 25th, 2009

Looking for a premier wedding DJ in the Puget Sound area?  Click Here!

Can you really keep a dance floor packed for two and a half hours?  If you had a crowd like I did at Melissa and Garret’s wedding reception at Salty’s on Alki, you could do it!  Family and friends gathered from as far as Lima, Peru for the celebration of the Alper’s union – and I think they might have wished the party could have went on until the wee hours!

If you haven’t been to Salty’s on Alki – please do – it has a beautiful view of the Seattle skyline.  Garret and Melissa used that as a backdrop for their reception atmosphere – along with combining a classy, elegant, modern, and swanky feel.  There are pictures below – do check them out!

For our Grand Entrance of the wedding party, we performed the 30 Second Introductions – and guests love hearing about who the wedding party members were and what they meant to Garret and Melissa.  And for my clients, since they had been together 8 years, I did a brief summary Love Story – highlighting the parts I felt guests would care about most!  A standing ovation and welcome into their reception was the start of a high-energy night!

After a fantastic seafood buffet, it was time for toasts and cake cutting, followed by Garret and Melissa’s First Dance and respective parent dances.  Everyone was gathered around the dance floor – and next on the itinerary was the Longest Married Couple dance.  But I caught myself thinking – they are ready to dance, let’s omit it.  It is fortunate that I have clients that are so willing to entrust me with the right decisions for their party – and I’m glad I opted to open the dance floor with “Stayin’ Alive” – it was the right choice.

And once they started dancing – they only stopped to catch their breath and grab a drink.  Two and a half hours on the turntables later – and a playlist featuring the best music throughout history! ;) – it was time to end the night with our final song of the night and hugs and farewells for Melissa and Garret.

And as a side note, Melissa’s bridesmaid Earline, said I was the best DJ in Seattle and her hometown of Miami.  Apparently, I’m the only wedding DJ she has seen spin on vinyl.  Not sure if that’s true or the alcohol talking.  I’ll go with the latter ;)

And finally!  Pictures for a giglog!  I remembered to bring my camera and actually use it!  So if you would like to see some pictures – look below!

8/16/09 – Justin & Jenna Takayoshi

August 17th, 2009

Looking for a premier wedding DJ in the Puget Sound area?  Click Here!

Ahhh, my final wedding of the weekend, Justin & Jenna Takayoshi’s reception at the Pioneer Park Pavilion in Puyallup.  As a bit of background to this couple, Justin and I played baseball together for many years.  Our family has remained close family friends throughout the years – so there was a bit of nervous pressure for me!  But nervous pressure and tension is a good thing if you know what to do with it – and like any high-quality entertainer – I have learned to bottle it and use it to focus my energy and direction on being in the moment and delivering a special performance.  And because of the nature of the event, I feel this was one of my finest performances, ever.

While I awaited outside for Justin and Jenna to arrive, I arranged for a nice cocktail mix to play in the background for the guests.  I’ll be honest here – the Pioneer Park Pavilion is a tough acoustic venue.  Many DJs have to bring in four speakers to cover the room – but with the Bose L1’s – two was plenty!  After lining up the wedding party, we brought them in for introductions – and then I narrated the Love Story I wrote for Justin & Jenna.  After their “Welcome & Thank You’s” it was time for dinner – however, despite a late arrival and entrance than planned – the catering staff was still not ready.  So I filled the time with our planned centerpiece give-away interaction (“The Dollar Pass”).  This prevent an awkard, uncomfortable waiting period – and kept the energy level high throughout dinner.

Before the evening’s toasts, I collected and read family and friend’s Words of Wisdom to Justin & Jenna – many recurring themes were advised, such as “Put the toliet seat down” and “Justin, two words to remember: You’re Right!”  After our toasts and cake cutting, we allowed for a few minutes of a social interlude as some guests unfortunately had to leave for their early morning work shifts.  But for all those that stayed…

Justin and Jenna shared a lovely first dance to Brad Paisley’s “Then” – one of my favorite slow songs.  Following the parent dances, many of the guests engaged in the Money Dance for Justin & Jenna’s honeymoon in Maui.  Then came the fun – a bouquet and garter toss, followed by my signature Garter On the Catcher of the Bouquet Routine.  As usual, I will just mention this – everyone enjoyed it immensely.  Finally, it was time to open the dance floor – and with the sunshine still shining in on the early Sunday evening – I still had a majority of the guests on the dance floor.

Playing a lot of fun songs and line dances, these guests just wanted to have fun – and they did.   The expectations on guests dancing was low – but I was determined to keep people on the dance floor and having a good time.  Perhaps it helped I setup a light show, despite the daylight hours – but I think it helped alter the atmosphere and create one that catered to dancing, even if it was barely visible.

Again, a night and reception I was honored and proud to have been a part of – and one of those nights where you realize why you are so passionate about this industry and why I do what I do every weekend.

7/31/09 – Josh & Colleen Freese

August 3rd, 2009

Looking for a premier wedding DJ in the Puget Sound area?  Click Here!

Ahh, the final wedding reception of July 2009 – and what a party it was!  Josh and Colleen held their wedding reception at  High Cedars Golf Course in Orting, WA and over 200 guests came to dance the night away!

Josh and Colleen were refered to me from my 2008 wedding clients, Justin and Stephanie Hite – who were both in attendance with their daughter Sophia.  During our planning meetings, Josh and Colleen were very specific in their style of their wedding: fun & upbeat without being cheesy; no games; keep it classy.  So did I deliver on their needs?  I’ll let Colleen’s email from the next day tell you:

Hi Tony!

Josh and I leave for our honeymoon tomorrow (at 4am!!) but I just wanted to shoot you a quick email saying THANK YOU so very much for such an incredible job!  I knew you were going to be great and you far surpassed anything we could have ever dreamed of.  You cannot believe how many people we had compliment us on our DJ and what a great party it was!  I have never seen our family members that drenched with sweat from dancing so hard in my entire life and I’m sure we will never see it again!

Thank you so much for making our reception SO MUCH BETTER than we could imagine. We will shout your name from the mountain tops when any of our newly engaged friends ask for recommendations!

Take care,
Colleen Freese

I love when couples have such a defined vision of their reception – it makes my job that much easier and allows me to focus on making sure everything I do is right for them.  It also helps to work alongside awesome vendors that “get it”.  From the venue and catering staff to the videographer to the photographer – everyone worked as a team to make this day perfect for Josh and Colleen!
